International students play a vital role at Harvard University, enriching its academic environment with diverse perspectives and enabling cross-cultural exchange that prepares students for leadership roles in today’s interconnected world. Most importantly though, they are key contributors to the school’s research and academic output.
In 2023, the latest available year, 46.9 percent of Harvard’s academic publications had international co-authors, up from just over 20 percent in 2001 and significantly higher than the national average, which is a testament to Harvard’s international approach to research and academia.
“Harvard’s global work is the result of a simple strategy for engagement with the world: attract talented students, faculty, and researchers from everywhere, empower them to pursue their academic goals wherever they lead, and support that work energetically,” the school lays out its commitment to openness and international cooperation, both of which are now at serious risk.
